Social Green Research

Building Knowledge on Social Sustainability

Through fieldwork, focus groups and in-depth interviewing, Social Green conducts research that answers your questions. By building knowledge about how environmental sustainability is achieved through the actions of everyday life, we can help you improve the performance of your green projects.

Some of the research Social Green is currently involved in include:

National Science Foundation Grant to Study Health and Well-Being in Green Communities
Dr. Mamo and Dr. Fosket are Co-PIs on this NSF-funded (award #0820788) research qualitatively examining the impact of green communities on inhabitants' health and well-being.

Understanding the Humans Inside the Buildings

Dr. Laura Mamo and Dr. Fosket are currently involved in a larger research project utilizing in-depth qualitative interviews to examine the experiences of living in environmentally sustainable communities. This project explores the impact of such communities on individual health and well being as well as on larger issues of social justice. This project also explores how people participate in creating sustainability in everyday life.

Community Greens
Dr. Mamo is part of a team of researchers examining the sociological impact of community greens on residents in Baltimore. The research quantitatively and qualitatively assesses the impact of alley gating and greening along three axes: health and well being; psychosocial issues; and community enhancement.

Social Sustainability Measurement Tool
Research is underway to develop a user-friendly survey instrument to assess and measure the degree of social sustainability in your green project.

Defining and Measuring Sustainability
Dr. Fosket is currently researching the development of tools to measure sustainability in the neighborhood and community context (i.e., LEED ND). What sustainability means and how consensus is formed around its measurement are key elements of this qualitative research.

The Women's Health and Environmental Awareness Project

Dr. Jennifer Fosket is a member of the research advisory board on this collaborative project to compile and disseminate research on the health effects of everyday cosmetics, cleaning products and other daily contaminants.

For more information about any of these research projects or to contact Social Green about conducting new research, contact Jennifer Fosket or Laura Mamo.
